Welcome to Synergistic Gardening

I’m glad you found my website!!!!!

Do you want to grow vegetables without using chemical fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides or pesticides?  Do you compost your household waste? Do you harvest rainwater or graywater for your garden?  Have you installed energy saving devices, solar panels and/or low-flush toilets?  Are you concerned about the planet we’re leaving for our children?  Are you an urban garden guerilla, modern homesteader or “shtf” prepper?  If you can answer yes to any of these questions, then Synergistic Gardening is for you.

Dictionary.com defines “synergy”, as the interaction of elements that when combined produce a total effect that is greater than the sum of the individual elements, contributions, etc.  Accordingly, I define Synergistic Gardening as the point where scientific knowledge and earth-friendly innovation meet the growing power of nature, resulting in an abundant, sustainable harvest.

I’m the son of parents who came of age in the United States during the Great Depression and dust bowl eras.  Both my mother and father grew up on farms, and both knew the value of a “penny saved”.  I listened to the lessons they taught . . . most of the time; and, when I didn’t listen carefully enough, I learned the hard way.

My first gardening experience was over fifty years ago when I planted a row of carrots as a Boy Scout who was working to earn a Nature merit badge.  I learned my first gardening lesson that summer . . . “you have to water your crops, if you expect a harvest.”

After graduating from Arizona State University, I’ve spent the next forty years working in the private and public sectors.  I plan to retire and become a full-time gardener on January 25, 2014.

I currently live in a typical suburban California neighborhood with my wonderful wife, two brilliant daughters and a feisty mini-dachshund, where I “grow my own” on a quarter-acre residential lot located twenty miles east of downtown Los Angeles in climate Zone 23.  About one-third of my growing area is on a north-facing, steep hillside.

The reason I started this website was because I needed something to keep me busy after I retire.  My website technical advisor is brilliant daughter #1 who recently received her bachelor’s degree in public relations and who currently works as a social media marketing professional; and, my scientific sustainable agriculture advisor is brilliant daughter #2 who is currently studying sustainable food systems and agriculture at the University of California at Davis.  “Honey Do Lists” are provided by my brilliant and beautiful wife who also works as a sales representative.  Now you know the rest of the story, as broadcaster Paul Harvey famously said.

So pour yourself a glass of lemonade, pull-up a chair and let’s spend some time togther.  I’ll be discussing tips, tools and techniques that I’ve learned over the past sixty years that have made me an “earth-friendly” gardener.

Now that we’re friends, I’m looking forward to visiting with you often.  I welcome your tips, feedback and suggestions.  Come back anytime; the porch light is always on.
